As CEO, Dan Florness plays a central role in setting and executing Fastenal’s strategy, presenting a clear vision for the organization’s ongoing evolution as a strategic supplier. Among other initiatives, he has helped lead the development of Fastenal’s automated supply technology and onsite service model, which have become key market differentiators. Reflecting Fastenal’s emergence as a technology leader in its industry, in 2019 Dan was recognized by Forbes as one of America’s most innovative leaders.
Dan joined Fastenal in 1996 and served as the company’s chief financial officer for 20 years. During this time, he gained a deep understanding of Fastenal’s culture and strategy while fostering its reputation for exemplary finance operations. In 2012, he was recognized as one of the nation’s 10 best CFOs by The Wall Street Journal and as CFO of the year by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.
Prior to joining Fastenal, Dan spent ten years with the public accounting firm of KPMG, LLP (previously KPMG Peat Marwick), where he audited companies engaged in distribution, retailing, manufacturing and construction. He later focused on developing and teaching courses related to these industries.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Wisconsin–River Falls in 1986 and was the 2017 recipient of the university’s Distinguished Alumni award.
